Oscars fashion: the main attraction of the 94th Academy Awards

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood made the best of the Oscar’s spring postponement and dressed for the season with pops of color and glittering sequins. They stunned in spring-time pastels, shined in rhinestones and coordinated with the red carpet in different shades of red.

The Oscars red carpet saw many a trend March 27 and The Panther is breaking down the top three.

  1. Pastels

What better way to mark the beginning of spring than with pastel? The shades are the most timeless necessity for the sunny, bird-chirping months. These celebrities embodied the light and airy nature of the season.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman, also known nowadays as Lucille Ball, hit the red carpet in a dusty blue Armani dress equipped with a rhinestone split train. She accompanied her look with the signature red Lucille Ball lip-stick that matched her vibrant red nails. Armani custom made this color for Kidman as she really wanted to wear blue, according to E! News

Perhaps it was to match the “Being the Ricardos” poster, or because it just suited her so well. Kidman was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Being the Ricardos," and although she didn't win, she won best dressed from The Panther.

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain was a vision in this rose gold and lilac Gucci dress decorated in sequins and, of course, a large ruffle to finish off the hem at the bottom. This extravagant gown was one clearly made for a winner, and Chastain certainly met that standard entering the night as a three-time Oscar nominee and leaving as a first-time Oscar winner for her role as Tammy Faye in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye."

Unlike her doll-like and heavily made up look in this film, she embodied a light and airy energy as she floated across the red carpet in this flowy spring number.

Demi Singleton

At just 15-years-old, Demi Singleton wooed the eyes of many in this lilac Miu Miu dress embellished with rhinestones, placed to create flower shapes of pink and silver. Although this was her first Oscars appearance, she will go down in red carpet fashion history with this strapless dress that was accentuated by a high-slicked back braid that was also fitted with rhinestones.

Singleton was not nominated for an Oscar; however, her first Oscars was certainly an eventful one as her co-star, Will Smith, slapped Chris Rock onstage, creating a massive controversy that took the internet by storm over the following days.

2. Sequins and Rhinestones

Although almost all the pastel dresses had an element of sparkle, there were many more to come that needed their own category. As the stars should, they entered the red carpet shining in an abundance of rhinestones and sequins. There was no way of missing the light reflecting off these celebrities on stage.

Jaimie Lee Curtis

Jaimie Lee Curtis wore a Stella McCartney crystal embroidered turtleneck midnight blue dress as she paid tribute to Betty White during the in memoriam segment of the Oscars. She was accompanied by a rescue puppy named Mac n’ Cheese to commemorate White’s love of animals. Curtis also sported a blue ribbon to show her support for Ukraine.

She wore the ribbon on top of her ring while on the red carpet, and later she revealed her large sapphire ring which complimented her midnight blue dress. Although Curtis is always radiant, it was really Mac ‘n’ Cheese that stole the show with his puppy eyes, as White would have wanted. As of March 30, Mac ‘n’ Cheese has been adopted by John Travolta’s son

Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes was one of the three hosts of the Oscars, alongside Regina King and Amy Schumer, after the show went hostless for three years. They certainly made up for their time at home by having 15 outfit changes between the three of them throughout the night. Sykes sported a Pamella Roland black fully sequined suit at the beginning of the show, which just sparkled as she made banter with her co-hosts.

Schumer hopped on the black sequined outfit train by wearing a black blazer dress with sequin embellishments at the end of the show when she joked in the most Schumer way possible, about the tone of the room seeming to change, referencing the Smith slap.

Sian Herded

Not only did Sian Herded bless everyone with the script for CODA, but she blessed viewers with her angelic silver presence in her mirrorball-esque Michael Kors dress. She paired it with a matching Tykler Ellis silver clutch and an elegant updo so viewers could see every single reflective piece on her dress.

She won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award for CODA. While accepting the award, she was accompanied by an interpreter on stage, so the deaf community could understand what she was saying in her touching speech.

3. Red

Without fail, every year, there are the people who come to the Oscars matching the red carpet. Luckily, this year, they were all in different shades of red, so they didn’t blend in too much.

Ariana DeBose

As the first openly queer woman of color to win an Oscar, Ariana DeBose held this title in style as she rocked a custom Valentino vibrant red two-piece cropped tank and pant combo that was topped off with an off-the-shoulder cape that she sassily swung around on the red carpet, channeling her inner Anita.

Her simplistic diamond necklace and short diamond earrings paired beautifully with the statement outfit. She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “West Side Story,” and her radiance is just as vibrant on the red carpet as it is on the big screen.

Wesley Snipes

Who said black tie attire meant you had to wear dress pants? Snipes proved that you could look just as dapper with shorts. The actor rocked his custom Givenchy maroon silk shorts, a flap reminiscent of something a gladiator would wear, tights, a bow tie, a dress and a jacket — all maroon.

Viewers couldn’t forget his aviator glasses which, of course, were also tinted maroon with gold frames. Snipes, who presented for Best Cinematography, did not take his job of standing on stage looking fabulous lightly.

Andrew Garfield

A bowtie doesn't have to be stiff and proper like most of the nominees wore; it can be fun and loose, like the one Andrew Garfield wore. Garfield, nominated Best Actor in a Leading Role for “tick, tick…BOOM!” paired his suede, maroon jacket with a black tie that is reminiscent of a bow you would put on a present.

Although he did not win for Best Actor, he did get to schmooze with Zendaya on the red carpet and received a smooch from his former roommate Jamie Doran, which is like winning in itself.
