LatinX Heritage Month, which is meant to celebrate all the different types of identities and traditions that exist among the LatinX community, officially starts  Sept. 15 and ends  Oct. 15. As there are over 30 countries comprising the LatinX diaspora, each embodying different experiences and backgrounds, it is important to learn about the diversity of these communities. We are not all homogenous, nor do we all speak the same language. 

Chapman’s Cross Cultural Center (CCC), the LatinX Club and the LatinX Faculty Forum have put together a number of events for these upcoming weeks, including film screenings, panels and social events.

Latine Heritage Month Kickoff 

Hosted by the CCC Thursday, Sept. 9 in the Argyros Forum (AF) Student Union 

To kick off the month of events, the CCC hosted a Latine Heritage Month kickoff event on the AF Student Union stage. They welcomed Chapman faculty Ruben Espinoza and Gabriella Castaneda, both of whom identify with the LatinX community, to share a little about themselves and how their identity has both helped and hindered their path to work in higher education. 

LatinX Club’s first meeting of the year 

Hosted by the LatinX Club Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in AF 209C 

Come join the LatinX club! This social club has its first meeting Monday night at 7 p.m. and you can stop by and meet the executive board, learn more about what they’re about, and get a glimpse of events they hold throughout the semester. 

Documentary Screening: “These Moments”

Hosted by the CCC Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. in the AF Student Union

The CCC will be hosting a documentary screening of the film “These Moments,” created by LatinX students in the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. This documentary is about three photographers, each capturing different social justice issues in the Black Lives Matter movement, the U.S.-Mexico border crisis and American Indian rights.

LatinX Club Potluck 

Hosted by the LatinX Club Friday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.

The LatinX club is having their first off-campus social event next Friday, where students can come and bring a dish or treat of their culture to share with others. This potluck requires an RSVP as well as a “CLEAR” screening email to attend — reach out to @chapmanlatinx on Instagram for further information. Open to everyone!

The LatinX Faculty Forum is hosting a meet-and-greet to get to know the current and new staff/faculty that has joined their team. This would be a great opportunity to learn about what the forum has to offer and how they could support you. 

Mateo Jarquin on “Las Sandinistas”

Hosted by the LatinX Faculty Forum Monday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the CCC

Come join and listen to the discussion of the documentary “Las Sandinistas” with Chapman history professor Mateo Jarquin. The documentary can be watched here, revealing “the untold stories of Nicaraguan women warriors and social revolutionaries who shattered barriers to lead combat and social reform during Nicaragua's 1979 Sandinista Revolution.”

LatinX Mental Health Panel 

Hosted by the CCC & LatinX Club Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 5:00 p.m. in the CCC

Mental health in the LatinX community is often stigmatized due to cultural norms, toxic masculinity, and history of undiagnosed mental health issues. Come listen to a conversation about how to better address mental health matters as a person of LatinX identity with the CCC and the LatinX club. 

LatinX LGBTQ+ Panel

Hosted by the CCC Wednesday, Oct. 6

To further push for inclusiveness in the LatinX community, it’s important to acknowledge those who identify within the LGBTQ+ community as well. The CCC is opening up the conversation of sharing both these identities and hosting a panel to promote healthy conversations and ask questions.
