In the fall of 2023, the Argyros College of Business and Economics held its first annual Dean’s Leadership Series. One of the most notable speakers of the past year was Earvin “Magic” Johnson

Henry Cronqvist, the dean of Argyros College, explained the importance of continuing the lecture series.

“We are committed to continuing to feature Chapman alumni and other accomplished business leaders in our Leadership Lecture Series,” Cronqvist told The Panther. “We strive to bring together a diverse group of leaders representing various backgrounds, genders, experiences and industries.”

It was announced early in the semester that this series would continue for the fall of 2024 beginning in late September.

Sonia L. Coleman, the chief human resources officer of the Walt Disney Company, kicked off the lecture series on Sept. 24. Coleman is a Chapman alumnus herself and graduated in 2004.

“Ms. Coleman highlighted the importance of embracing challenging opportunities and leading with empathy and purpose, which have been instrumental in her impactful career at Disney,”  Cronqvist explained. “She also emphasized the significance of staying curious and committed to lifelong learning, reminding us that growth and development don't end at graduation but are crucial for success in any role.”

Coleman was also presented with the 2024 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award at the event.

The second speaker of the series was a day later on Sept. 25 with John Mackey, who is both the founder and former CEO of Whole Foods. At the lecture, he discussed his new book, ‘The Whole Story.’

“Mr. Mackey, during ‘The Whole Story,’ underscored the need for a business purpose that goes beyond profit, advocating for the well-being of all stakeholders,” Cronqvist told The Panther. “He spoke about the essential role of innovation and adaptability in navigating a dynamic market and emphasized the value of a company culture rooted in trust, collaboration, and empowerment.”

At the end of the lecture, Mackey was awarded the Doti-Spogli Free EnterPRIZE award for his contributions.

On Oct. 4, Chapman alumni from the class of 2017, Alexander Jekowsky spoke in the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics. Jekowsky discussed his first startup he began during his time at Chapman and is currently working on his second business venture in the laundromat industry.

The final speaker for the series will be Chapman alumni, Denise Roberson, from the class of 1998 on Oct. 16. Roberson is the chief purpose officer at Omnicom and is passionate about climate change and sustainability in business. Her lecture will take place at 6 pm in Beckman 404.
Both of the final lectures will be open to students of all majors and tickets can be reserved on the Chapman ticketing website.
