Chapman Sports | What is happening this week?
Ten different Chapman sports teams are in action this week, competing in 13 games and events.
It all kicks off tomorrow night. Both men’s and women’s soccer will be playing against California Lutheran University in their third Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchups of the year. The men will play on Wilson Field at 4 p.m. and are looking to get back on track, not having won a game since their season opener against Stanton University. The women’s team, who play away at 7 p.m., is looking to bounce back after a tough 3-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CMS) this weekend. They won their SCIAC opener 4-2 over Redlands University last Wednesday.
Men’s golf is hosting a Tri-Match on Friday at Costa Mesa Country Club. They will be playing against CMS and La Verne University. This is the team’s second event after competing in the California State Intercollegiate. The women’s team is not in action as they completed their Tri-Match this past weekend and also went to the same tournament at the start of the season.
Women’s and men’s tennis will get their respective seasons off and running this weekend. Both squads will be competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Fall West Regionals, which is a three-day tournament hosted by CMS. Chapman finished second in the singles and doubles for the men last year. Graduate student Caleb Wilkins, a mathematics major, was defeated in the singles competition final and both Wilkins and Ian Jordan were defeated in the doubles final. The same was true on the women’s side as then sophomore Makaylee Dahms lost in the singles final as well as the doubles with her partner Ava Tyler, a business administration major now in her senior season. Dahms, a biological sciences major, could be looking to do one better this year. Jordan, now a sophomore, will want to get one up on his legendary doubles partner.
Saturday has a packed slate of events. Cross country will be running at the Cougar Challenge, hosted by California State University, San Marcos. There will be an 8K course and a 6K one. Look out for senior communication studies major Annika Carlson, who broke Chapman’s 5K record and finished second at the University of California, Riverside Invitational last weekend.
Men’s water polo has a grueling double-header on Saturday. They play their first SCIAC game at 11 a.m. at CMS, before coming home to play at 7 p.m. against Air Force Academy. Chapman already beat Air Force 20-10 at the Titan Invitational on Sept. 14, which was the last day they were in action. The team has won three and lost three so far, and will want to have a clean sweep this weekend.
Volleyball is playing Cal Lutheran at 4 p.m. in Harold Hutton Sports Center, which is their first game of SCIAC play. Chapman is on a three game losing streak and will need to lean on their experienced players to get their sixth win of the early season.
Both soccer teams are back in action Saturday night, with a double-header on Wilson Field. The men’s team will be playing Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 5 p.m., hoping to cap off a successful week. The women’s team will also be up against Pomona-Pitzer right after the conclusion of the men’s game. It will be an all Panthers versus Sagehens night on campus.
Football will be away from home for the second week running, after losing a tight game to Whitworth University. Quarterback Luke Peterman, a senior political science major, and his squad will want to bounce back in their first SCIAC game, as they will be away to Redlands at 7 p.m. The Panthers can start their title defense in style if they walk out of enemy territory with a win.
Swimming and Diving doesn’t have their first official meet yet, but will be having some fun in the Alumni Meet as pre-season rolls on.
A few featured games and events during the week will be broadcast through CSBN and FloSports, and live stats will be available on the Chapman Athletics website. Go out and catch your Panthers live this week, there are plenty of home games to cheer Chapman on as we head into the thick of the fall sports schedule.
