Who has better movie opinions: Dodge College or main campus?

Dodge College of Film and Media Arts’s Marion Knott Studios is only two blocks away from Chapman University’s main campus. So close, and yet so much is different about the two. The thing that may set them apart the most is their movie opinions.

It may be known that film students have some pretty intense — and possibly pretentious — film opinions. “Film bros” overshadow other students' opinions, with their Top Four on Letterboxd reading “The Godfather,” “The Godfather Part II,” “Pulp Fiction” and “The Dark Knight.”

Main campus feels like the opposite. Business majors definitely don’t have AMC A-List or DVDs from the Criterion Channel. What do they know about movies?

The Panther took to the hallways and sidewalks of Dodge and main campus to ask students about their favorite and least favorite movies.

Video by Izzy Betz and Caroline Linton

At the end of the interviews, we asked each student to share the biggest misconceptions about them and their movie opinions.

The most common misconception is that all Dodge kids have good taste or everyone that is not in Dodge has bad taste. I have seen every single A24 movie. I really liked most of them. I have a friend who is in Dodge and he will not watch anything that doesn’t have either Jack Black or Adam Sandler in it.
— Silas, psychology major
We don’t all think ‘Tarantino is this director I love’ or like obscure black-and-white movies from 1927. I know for me, I just love super campy horror. That’s the kind of person I am. I got into it because of ‘Shaun of the Dead.’ I like silly things, I’m not super serious. We are not all very uptight — some of us are — but not all of us.
— Belle, film production major

In truth, we asked each student more questions than shown in this video — but if I included the many rants about guilty pleasure films and the admissions of movies that they lie about having watched, we would be here all day.

Who do you think had better movie opinions? Have Dodge majors dug themselves a bigger hole? Did main campus come out on top? Let us know down below.
